    Why Smart Locks Fail, and Which Failures Are Actually the Door

    Most smart lock problems are not smart lock problems.

    They are door problems that a human hand was quietly compensating for, right up until a small battery-powered motor had to do the same job and could not.

    That is the single most useful thing to understand before you buy one, and it explains almost every failure we get called out to.

    The thing a motor cannot do that your hand can

    Think about how much force is available at each end.

    When you turn a thumbturn, you are applying torque through your wrist. If the bolt catches slightly on the strike plate, you push a bit harder without registering it. If the door needs a nudge to line up, you lean on it. People do this for years without ever noticing the door is out of alignment, because the compensation is automatic.

    A smart lock replaces that wrist with a small geared motor running off AA batteries. It has a fixed amount of torque and no judgement. If the bolt meets resistance, it either stalls, or it drives partway and reports jammed, or it retracts and tries again until the batteries are flat.

    So the failure mode is not that the lock broke. It is that the lock stopped hiding a problem the door already had.

    This is why the most common call is "it worked fine before we installed this."

    The three measurements that decide whether it fits

    Before anything else, a smart lock has to physically fit. Three numbers.

    Backset. The distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the bolt hole. In North America this is almost always 2 3/8 inches or 2 3/4 inches. Most smart locks ship with an adjustable latch that handles both, but not all do, and a lock with the wrong fixed backset will not reach.

    Door thickness. Usually 1 3/8 or 1 3/4 inches. The tailpiece and mounting screws are sized for a range. Thicker doors, and some solid or fire rated doors, fall outside what the hardware ships to handle.

    Bore hole diameter. The main hole through the door face, typically 2 1/8 inches. Smaller and it needs enlarging. Larger, from previous hardware, and you may need a filler plate.

    Two more that catch people out. Metal and glass doors frequently need a specific model or a different mounting approach entirely. And doors with a very narrow stile, common on some patio and side entry doors, may not have enough material for the housing.

    Measure these before you buy. It takes two minutes and it is the difference between an install and a return.

    The failures we actually see, in order

    1. The bolt drags on the strike plate

    By far the most common. The door has settled, the frame has moved with humidity, or the strike was never quite right. The bolt is not passing cleanly into the hole behind the strike. Symptoms are a motor that whines and stops, a lock that reports jammed, batteries that die in weeks rather than months, and the door locking fine when you hold it closed but not when you let it sit.

    The fix is the strike, not the lock. Sometimes it is filing or repositioning the strike plate. Sometimes it is deepening the pocket behind it. Occasionally it is the hinges, if the whole door has dropped.

    2. Backset or thickness mismatch

    The lock is fighting geometry. Either it does not reach, or the tailpiece does not engage properly, or the exterior and interior halves are being pulled together at an angle. This one is usually obvious during install and is a "wrong model" problem rather than a repair.

    3. The old strike does not suit the new bolt

    Smart lock bolts are sometimes a different length or profile from what came out. A strike hole that worked for the old bolt can be marginally wrong for the new one, and marginal is enough.

    4. Batteries

    Genuine battery failure exists, but check the other three first. Rapid drain is usually a symptom of the motor working too hard, not of bad batteries.

    5. Connectivity

    Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues are real but they are a different category. The lock still works mechanically, you just cannot reach it remotely. Worth separating from a lock that physically will not throw its bolt, because the fixes have nothing in common.

    What a smart lock is genuinely good at

    Worth being clear, because we install plenty of them and they solve a real problem.

    A smart lock is about access management, not about strength. It is the right answer when people need to get in and you are not there. Cleaners, dog walkers, guests, family, contractors, a rental turnover.

    The specific advantage over a physical key is that a code can be changed in seconds and cannot be copied at a hardware counter. If you hand out keys, you have no idea how many exist. If you hand out codes, you can remove one when somebody no longer needs it.

    For anyone running a seasonal or vacation rental in this area, that is the whole argument. Keypad entry between guests removes the key handover and the rekeying that should otherwise happen every turnover.

    What it is not good at

    It does not make a weak door strong. The bolt still goes into the same strike, held by the same screws, in the same frame. If those screws are three quarter inch and reach only the trim, the door opens with a shoulder whether the lock is smart or not.

    If you are already having a smart lock fitted, that is the moment to have the strike reinforced and long screws driven into the framing behind the jamb. It costs almost nothing alongside work already happening and it is where the actual security lives.

    It does not survive a dead battery gracefully unless you plan for it. Most have a physical key override or external contacts. Know which yours has before you need it.

    One thing specific to Southwest Florida

    Humidity moves doors. A door that latches cleanly in February can drag in August, and wood doors move more than you would expect.

    That matters for smart locks because the tolerance for a motor is narrower than the tolerance for a hand. A door that is seasonally marginal will work half the year and throw errors the other half, and people replace a perfectly good lock chasing it.

    If your smart lock started misbehaving as the weather changed rather than all at once, that is the cause, and the fix is adjusting the strike so the bolt has clearance at the door's worst point rather than its best.

    Before you buy, or before we come out

    Check these and the visit gets much shorter.

    • Does the door latch cleanly right now with the existing lock, without lifting or pushing?
    • Backset, door thickness and bore diameter
    • Whether the door is wood, metal or glass
    • Whether the door is exterior facing the water, which changes what hardware holds up
    • If you already bought the lock, have the model to hand

    If the answer to the first one is no, fix that first. Everything else is downstream of it.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why won't my smart lock bolt all the way?

    Almost always because the bolt is dragging against the strike plate rather than passing cleanly into the hole behind it. A hand turning a thumbturn has far more force available than a small motor running on batteries, so a door that was slightly out of alignment worked fine manually and stops working the moment a motor has to do it. Fixing the alignment fixes the lock.

    Will a smart lock fit my door?

    Three measurements decide it. The backset, which is the distance from the door edge to the centre of the bolt hole, usually 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches. The door thickness, usually 1 3/8 or 1 3/4 inches. And the bore hole diameter. Most smart locks handle the common sizes, but metal doors, glass doors and non-standard thicknesses often need a specific model or will not work at all.

    Do smart locks make a door more secure?

    Not by themselves. A smart lock changes how the bolt is operated, not what the bolt goes into. Security still comes from the bolt, the strike plate and the screws reaching the framing behind the jamb. A smart lock on a weak frame is a weak door you can open from your phone.

    Why does my smart lock keep eating batteries?

    Usually because the motor is working harder than it should on every cycle. If the bolt drags, the motor draws more current each time and battery life collapses. Rapid battery drain is often the first symptom of an alignment problem rather than a fault in the lock.

    Can you install a smart lock I already bought?

    Usually yes, and if it turns out not to fit the door we will tell you why rather than force it. The common blockers are backset, door thickness and a strike that does not suit the new bolt, and most of those are correctable during the visit.
